12 Ways to Be a Natural Beauty Rockstar

You don’t need harsh chemicals – or tons of time – to get shiny, healthy hair and smoother skin. Just steal these gentle, back-to-basics moves to start looking like a natural beauty rockstar. Whether you are new to natural products or just looking to shake up your routine, we’ve got the recommendations for you to make your natural essence and beauty shine all day and night long.

Fabulous & Fresh Face

  • For a radiant complexion slice a few grapes in half and rub the inside over your clean skin. The fruit acids are natural exfoliators and will give you a glowing look. Remember to rinse after about 5 minutes.
  • Puffy eyes be gone with a chilled eye cream (tip: keep your cream in the fridge for easy access and always chilled). Apply it from the outer edges of your eyes towards your nose. This helps drain excess fluid in the area. Try Nourish Organic’s Renewing + Cooling Eye Treatment ($20.99; soaphope.com). We love the feel of the metal on our skin for that extra pick me up.
  • Zap blemishes with two ingredients homeopaths have used for centuries: arnica which is filled with anti-inflammatory benefits and antibacterial tea tree oil. Find them here in the purest form arnica oil ($13.50) and tea tree oil ($7.29).

Maximize Moisturizers and Face Masks

  • A unique way to stay protected, apply a moisturizer with aloe vera before sunscreen; studies have shown the ingredient decreases the effect of UV radiation on skin and may help prevent sunburns. We like Jason’s Soothing Moisturizing Creme ($9.00).
  • Increase the effectiveness of a facial mask by applying it in the shower, where steam opens pores so ingredients can penetrate. Check out a large selection over 40+ masks to find the perfect one to pair with your next shower ($2.00 and up).
  • Brighten up and protect your skin against environmental aggressors such as UV rays and pollution to fight free radicals that cause premature signs of skin aging. Studies show that antioxidants can neutralize these damaging free radicals. Put up your defense with Avalon Organics Intense Defense that is rich in Vitamin C, White Tea, and Lemon Bioflavonoids to defend and support skin.

Bronzed, Bold, and Beautiful

  • Get bronzed skin without the damage of the sun or toxic self-tanners. Mix one teaspoon organic sunscreen and a pinch of loose mineral bronzer in your palm, then blend it over your face for an instant and protective glow. Try Derma-E Natural Mineral Sunscreen SPF 30 ($15.80), and Mahya Mineral Cosmetic Bronzers in a variety of shades ($25.00).
  • Firmer jaw, neck, and throat just practice these simple exercises in the morning and evening, or while stuck in traffic, or in the line at the store. Basically, you can do these anywhere! Slowly tilt your head back, pucker up, and try to kiss the ceiling; repeat at minimum 4 times in a row. These are exercises for your face.

Hair Helpers

Strong, Sleek, and Frizz Free

  • Add shine to your hair by adding a few drops of Acure The Essentials Moroccan Argan Oil throughout damp hair. The star ingredient, argan oil, makes strands glossy, but won’t weigh them down or feel oily.
  • Strengthen hair with a mayo mask or coconut mask. Comb 1/2 a cup through wet hair, wait 15 minutes, and rinse with cool water; shampoo as usual after. We love Nature’s Way Organic Coconut Oil ($18.00) and it will last forever.

Valentine’s Inspired Essential Oil Blends

Creating your own essential oil blend l is a great way to create the perfect recipe for what you need. Coming up with essential oil blends that pique both of your interests intimately, enhance energy, relieve tension, or relax the senses is a fun activity that helps you learn about yourself and how to balance. Here are our  Valentine’s Day-inspired essential oil blend recipes that are sure to please everyone. Make them for yourself or gift them.

What’s really fun about the essential oils in these blends is you don’t need to limit them to just massage oils. You can put them in your diffuser, in a bubble bath, in a room spray, and so much more! Even a vacuum! Check out this past article about using your vacuum as a diffuser. You can choose which recipes fit your mood, alter them to your liking, and just run with it.

You can use any carrier oil you like for the base of these recipes like sweet almond, avocado, olive oil, etc. Feel free to make larger or smaller quantities to suit your needs!

Dry Brushing Benefits

What if I told you there’s a simple wellness trick that only takes five minutes a day, costs nothing, and helps cleanse your body, inside and out? Dry skin brushing has a number of health benefits and is so simple to do.

So how does it work?

Your skin, the largest organ in the human body is an organ of elimination. One-third of your body’s toxins are excreted through the skin and dry brushing helps to unclog pores and excrete toxins that become trapped in the skin.

To get started, follow the simple steps below:

1. Purchase a natural (not synthetic) bristle brush with a long handle so can reach all areas of your body. We recommend EcoTools Dry Body Brush.

2. Get naked and stand in a bathtub or tiled surface to catch the falling skin. (It’s a bit gross, I know.)

3. Begin brushing by starting at your feet and moving in long sweeping motions toward your heart. Always brush toward your heart.

4. Brush several times in each area, overlapping as you go.

5. Take care as you brush over more sensitive areas. Your skin will become less sensitive the more you dry brush.

6. Once you’ve brushed your entire body, jump in the shower. (I like to alternate between the hottest water temperature I can tolerate and the coldest. This stimulates blood circulation, bringing more blood to the top layers of the skin.)

7. After getting out of the shower, pat dry skin and apply a natural body oil. We’ve got a variety of options here.

8. Continue to dry brush your entire body every other day. Remember to clean your brush with soap and water once a week. Leave to dry in a clean, sunny spot to avoid any mildew accumulation on your brush.

Try this for 30 days and see the results for yourself!

Some benefits of dry skin brushing:

1. You’ll exfoliate dead skin.

Forget your in-shower loofah and body scrubs, this will ensure you have silky-smooth skin all year round!

2. It stimulates your lymphatic system.

Dry brushing your skin will kick start your lymphatic system, which helps you remove toxins from the body. The stiffer the bristles on the brush, the better the lymphatic stimulation you’ll create.

3. Dry brushing helps to reduce cellulite.

Cellulite is simply toxic materials that have accumulated in your body’s fat cells and are trapped, unable to be eliminated from the body. Forget lipo, dry skin brushing helps to break down any trapped toxins from within the body and help your body eliminate them through its usual elimination channels.

4. It unclogs pores and de-congests skin.

Dry skin brushing unclogs the pores of your skin and helps your skin absorb more nutrients. Daily skin brushing promotes healthy, breathing skin. It’s a real treat for the largest organ in our bodies!

Brush, Brush, Brush!

Sewing A Brighter Future

Inocencia Gomez is a strong woman with a happy spirit and a loving heart. This mother of five children operates a sewing business – creating sheets, curtains, furniture and much more for her community – and sells beauty products on the side.

Hard work has brought this woman a life she loves, but she has not always experienced such happiness.

With the first loan from Esperanza of only $45 dollars, she took the reins of her business and became the author of her own success. The capital enabled Inocencia to buy whole rolls of cloth for the first time, which greatly increased the efficiency of her business and the value of her products.

Over the course of twelve years and with the help of twenty loans, Inocencia continued working and growing her company. She increased her creditworthiness enough to buy a motorcycle, which allowed her to sell her handicrafts in multiple locations including a nearby beach for tourists.

With each loan, Inocencia’s business improved. She bought new equipment and higher quality fabrics, making her business one of the premier sewing operations in her community.

With each improvement came increased profitability, enabling Inocencia to provide a better life for herself and her family. “Now I can buy my food without credit. I’m much better because, with Esperanza, I’ve remodeled my house. Look at the little kitchen I’ve started.”

Inocencia even has enough money to help others in her community, often helping to pay for funerals for those whose families cannot afford them.

As for her future, Inocencia has high hopes for her and her children. “I always hope to live better than how I live now and to help my children live a better life than I had.”

5 Must Fall Cleaning Tips

Fall is the perfect season to complete maintenance projects around the house. The air is slightly cooler, but it’s still not cold enough for outdoor work to be uncomfortable. And since you will soon be spending more time indoors, plugging air leaks, checking and cleaning smoke and carbon monoxide detectors as well as ensuring little creatures haven’t made your home their home for the winter ahead will help make everyone comfortable and safe in your home.

For a beautiful home outdoors and warm indoors, follow these fall care tips.

Clean the porch and terrace

Your porch and deck will not be used as much in the colder months, so take the time to sweep and wash them. If you have plastic garden furniture, use a solution of Better Life dish soap and warm water to wash the table and chairs. Dry your furniture well before storing it or covering it with a waterproof tarp.

If you have potted plants on your porch or deck, bring them indoors before the mercury drops below 60 ° F (16 ° C). Take this time to remove the dead leaves or transfer them to a new pot, if necessary.

Seal slots, windows, and doors

Checking for air leaks in windows and doors prevents cold air infiltration into your home and saves you money on your next heating bill. Several leaks can be identified through a detailed visual inspection of each entrance and window. Less visible leaks can be identified by an infrared thermometer that will detect cooler air temperatures around doors and windows, indicating leakage. Seal these leaks the right way with a sealant that can be purchased at your local hardware store.

Clean and repair the gutters

Remove dead leaves, feathers, and dirt from the gutters before they damage them. Remove large debris using your hands, and then use a small tool such as a spade or garden shovel to remove smaller debris. Remember to install gutter guards to prevent gutters from being clogged in the future.

Fertilize the lawn

To make your lawn greener and healthier next spring, fertilize it in the fall. The roots absorb and store nutrients during the cooler months more than in any other season. For best results, be sure to use the right fertilizer for your lawn and your area. We recommend a natural fertilizer or perhaps even visiting your local farmer for some uh really natural fertilizer.

Check the status of smoke and carbon monoxide detectors

When mercury falls, we tend to spend more time indoors preparing hearty meals, watching TV next to the fireplace and celebrating the holidays with our families. That’s why it’s so important to change the batteries in your smoke and carbon monoxide alarms twice a year, in the spring and fall. First, tell everyone in the house that you are going to test the detector. Then ask someone to stand as far as possible from the detector in the house. If he or she cannot hear it well, you may need to install more detectors in areas where the sound is attenuated. Finally, press the button for the test and hold it down. Change the batteries if the sound is weak, if there is no sound, or if the batteries were last changed more than six months ago. Dust, all detectors with a feather duster, accumulated dust in the grids, could prevent the detector from working, even if you changed the batteries recently.

Heating to point

Check the boiler and purge the vents to eliminate air that may have accumulated in your circuit, as it will impair its operation, it will improve distribute heat and reduce annoying noises.

The chimneys should be checked once a year to remove the soot stuck to their walls. In this way, we will make sure that it works correctly and that the smoke goes out without difficulty while avoiding the possibility of a fire.

Finally make your home feel the warmth of the season with a candle or two throughout. Check out the seasonal scents here.

Are you being “cleanwashed” by big beauty?

Don’t ever fall for cleanwashing!

Stop! You’re checking your dictionary for the meaning of “cleanwashing.” You won’t find it there—this practice is still pretty new and it might take a while for the term to be part of contemporary English.

So, what is cleanwashing?

It means marketing products as “clean” or “non-toxic” without backing up these claims, especially when the claims are not true. It is similar to greenwashing, where products are marketed as being “green” or “environmentally-friendly” when in reality they are not. You should be careful, as cleanwashing is the newer version of greenwashing. Nowadays, words like “clean,” “non-toxic,” “organic,” and “natural” might be misleading. Just because a product is labeled “clean” or “non-toxic” doesn’t mean it’s good for you. Always check the ingredients. Learn what the mean, how they affect you, and how to pick what is best for you. Check out Soap Hope’s product and ingredient rating system here.

So, what does “clean” really mean?

The term “clean,” when it comes to beauty and skincare, has no clear-cut explanation or meaning. No government or third-party certified standard exists to qualify a product as “clean.” Because of this, manufacturers of skincare and beauty products have the leverage with their definition and explanation of clean. As consumers increasingly demand natural and clean products, most brands label their products as clean, non-toxic or natural, and have very little evidence to back up those claims. Amongst the few that make their standards public, they make it so ambiguous that you end up more confused than before. In the end, it becomes more difficult to tell what’s safe from what isn’t.

Are you being cleanwashed?

How do you spot out cleanwashing from all the product claims out there?

Simple! When you’re out shopping for beauty products, watch out for the terms “clean,” “non-toxic,” “chemical-free,” “active,” “plant-based,” “handmade,” “organic,” or “safe” on the product labels.

Though some of the traditional products with such labeling will be more effective than their conventional alternatives, others might be wolves in sheep clothing. It is crucial to set your own benchmark for clean, so as not to fall for cleanwashing. Having done that, you have to do your research and if you discover any of these things, then you’ve caught cleanwashing right in the act:

  • the manufacturers refuse to reveal their standards, even after claiming to be clean or non-toxic on their labeling.
  • when they reveal their standards, they make it ambiguous—if a manufacturer has skeletons in their cupboard, they’ll intentionally make their standards vague, or hide it altogether.
  • There is no team or individual that can be held responsible for their standards.
  • They do not convey the meaning of their ingredients properly or the sources for those ingredients.
  • They say one thing on their product labeling, but the ingredients sing a completely different tune. Always read the ingredients.

Don’t fall for cleanwashing

Aha! Now that you can spot out cleanwashing by due diligence, how do you weed it out on the go? By becoming an ingredients expert of course! By having a good understanding of what ingredients constitute a safe, natural or organic formula for body and skin care products, weeding out cleanwashers becomes an easy task. Before going for any product that claims to be clean, non-toxic, organic, or natural, ensure to scrutinize the ingredients list to see if the ingredients match the huge claim. Most brands indicate natural or organic ingredients with an asterisk. Check out the ingredients we ban at Soap Hope here.

If you come across an ingredient that you’re unfamiliar with or are in doubt regarding its safety or functions, ensure to look it up.  We have many resources at our fingertips now to learn about any ingredient’s concern or safety.

Now that you have a clear understanding of what to look for, be bold enough to choose brands that you can trust and that their products work best for your skin. Always look out for transparency, as the real “clean” brands will have nothing to hide. Shop smart! Shop Soap Hope 😊

A Block Party

Carmen was our last interview at the end of a long week – a week filled with early mornings at sunrise, action-packed afternoons, late evening dinners and debriefings. Not to mention that every woman we had sat down with up to this point had extraordinary stories to tell, which led us to ask the question… “Is every story we hear going to be powerful and emotional?”

I’m not going to answer that quite yet, at least not until I share more about Carmen.

As you walk into Carmen’s house, the first thing you’ll notice is how meticulously clean it is. The floors? Spotless. The walls? Pristine-ly decorated. The furniture? Rather exquisite. But then we were greeted by Carmen – with a big hug and a kiss on the cheek. Her smile radiated throughout the room and made everything else seem, well, unnecessary. She was so excited to meet us and even more excited to be hosting us in her home. Her excitement and enthusiasm spread through our team like wildfire and made me feel like this was the first interview of the week!

Before I could explain too much, Carmen grabbed my hand and said: “Let me show you my businesses.” Businesses? As in plural? Sure enough, she walked us a short way up the street and showed us a block of stores. She said, “These are mine.”

Three separate stores. And big ones, too. One was all about footwear. Any Nike or Adidas shoe you can think of, she sells it. Next door is a colmado, or convenience store, and finally, there’s a motorcycle repair shop. Now she doesn’t manage these all herself – her son helps run the stores and her grandchildren help out too. In fact, when I asked to purchase a couple gallon jug of water, her 10-year-old grandson jumped in and explained to me that that was his job. He took me around to the spot where they kept the filled jugs – keys in hand – and retrieved one for me. I asked him if I could carry it back to Carmen’s house but he wouldn’t give it up. He insisted he is the one to carry it there.

Now back to Carmen. After getting to witness her entire block of businesses in action, I was eager to learn more. Did she always have these? How has her journey influenced her family? And most importantly, how has the partnership with Esperanza empowered her to do more?

La Jefa (The Boss)

Sometimes you come across someone that is so impressive you want to spend every moment you can with them. Not to simply chat or to just be around just for the sake of it – but rather to learn, hanging on every word they say and every action they take. Andrea is that someone. Within moments we realized she was La Jefa or the boss.

Every month there are conferences around the world that showcase politicians, activists, and business leaders that have incredible stories and experiences that make people want to listen to them for hours. Well, I’d go so far as to say that Andrea’s story or her presence could command any stage – and I didn’t want to just listen to her for hours, I could have listened for days!

You see, Andrea isn’t just a great great grandmother (that’s not a typo), active business consultant and owner of a fishing empire, she literally runs her community. And she does it in a way that’s powerful and strong, but also entirely humble. You could tell in each interaction she had with a family member, employee, neighbor, or client that they both loved and respected her dearly. Someone doesn’t get both of those unless they know how to lead – and lead well.

While sitting down with Andrea I was a bit surprised at how much she had to say. From sharing about her family to telling us about her journey as a business owner, I felt that unique feeling that many interviewers get. It’s that “I feel like I’ve known you for so long” feeling. Her tone was warm but her words were firm, not shying away from the harsher moments of her story.

The greatest moment, for me at least, came at the end as Andrea shared what she is most proud of in her life. She paused for a moment, took a look outside at her great-grandchildren and that proceeded to tell us her how she is most proud about the fact that she has provided an example for her great-grandchildren of the importance of hard work, serving others, and perseverance.

What’s next for Andrea? She plans to go back to school and get a degree. Considering what she’s already accomplished, that should be no problem for Andrea. After all, she is La Jefa.
